The story behind
the name "Red Mountain Yoga" |
| |
|
|
| Patrick: |
|
"Our original business name was ‘Red Mountain Yoga’. In 1999 we informally changed it to “Red Mountain Yoga & Pilates”. In 2008 we moved to Bellingham and changed our business name to ‘Red Mountain Wellness’ to reflect our multiple wellness offerings. That being said, over the years people have wanted to know how we came up with our original name." |
| |
|
|
| Patrick: |
|
"The story
behind our name is like the story behind much of what we do together.
Namely, Deborah's insight and intuition lead us to 'just the
right thing' that later turns
out to be logical and sensible." |
| |
|
|
| Deborah: |
|
"Patrick wanted to
call it 'Inner Light Yoga.' It sounded good but somehow it didn't
quite fit. Then, while driving past the red earth of the Northern
California hillsides, I thought of the name 'Red Mountain Yoga'."
|
| |
|
|
| Patrick: |
|
"After Deborah suggested 'Red
Mountain Yoga,' I told her that my 7th-grade Latin teacher had
said that our last name, Redmond, is 'Rubrimontanus' or 'Red
Mountain.' Therefore, I thought it was a great name."
|
| |
|
|
| Deborah: |
|
"I like the name because it sounds
earthy & majestic and that's what Yoga is like. In Yoga,
we work to become grounded in the world (earthy) and inspired
towards a higher purpose (majestic)."
|
| |
|
|
| Patrick: |
|
"After choosing our name, we learned
that the great Indian saint & yogi - Ramana Maharshi - lived
most of his life in a cave in the "Red Hill" or "Red
Mountain" called Arunachala. To this day, Arunachala remains
one of India's sacred pilgrimage sites. Surely an auspicious
sign."

Deborah Redmond, MA, MFT
Deborah grew up in Los Angeles as a contemplative child. She yearned to understand the nature of the human condition. Encouraged by her spiritual grandfather, she spent many hours studying philosophy, psychology and religion. In 1985, her father introduced her to an Indian Yoga teacher. After 8 years with her first teacher, Deborah studied and practiced with other teachers and developed her own teaching style. Using heart, intuition and a keen ability to integrate and simplify
healing arts, she helps people experience lasting personal transformations.

Patrick Redmond
As a teenager, Patrick longed for
deeper meaning in life. Then, his father died suddenly of a heart attack
at the age of 49. This led Patrick to become a vegetarian. A few years
later, while buying his groceries at Avatar's Golden Temple in New
Cumberland, PA, he saw a flyer for Siri Neel Singh Khalsa's Kundalini
Yoga classes. Feeling a "natural high" from his first class,
he found that Yoga offered a holistic way to inner peace. Patrick continues to study and practice Yoga and he primarily teaches Pilates Equipment Classes and Franklin Method Classes & Workshops.

| |
At Red Mountain Evolved Pilates, we teach Pilates as a dynamic, living system of exercise rooted in Joseph Pilates’ original work and carefully refined to reflect contemporary & cutting edge principles of human movement potential. We approach Pilates as a lifelong learning process of continuing education, research and development. Deborah Redmond, MA, MFT, Clinical Director is the source of our innovative approach to Pilates. Deborah & Patrick also thank Eric Franklin, creator of The Franklin Method, for his cutting-edge work & his influence on Red Mountain Evolved Pilates.
 |
|
As a client of Red Mountain Evolved Pilates, you will experience the benefits of our integrated approach. You show up to class twice a week and we take care of the rest. We carefully teach you Reformer, Cadillac/Pole & Chair by rotating which apparatus you use during each 6-week series. You learn and practice a well-rounded repertoire on various Pilates equipment. You will love the variety & challenge of your workouts. Most of all, you will LOVE how you feel in your new Pilates body!
Red Mountain Evolved Pilates is FUN! Our clients often say such things as: “I love my Pilates!”; “Every week I look forward to my Pilates!”; and “I really enjoy my Pilates!” Our approach is what makes it so much fun. Deborah’s innovative sequences include multi-planar, spherical movements that challenge your muscles in various ways using lots of exercises & equipment. The way we teach you invites fresh attention, keeps you mentally present and creates new neuromuscular connections.
Red Mountain Evolved Pilates is a mindful, progressive form of low-impact exercise & resistance-based strength training that focuses on the uniform development of the body. It promotes a healthy spine, remedies physical imbalances and often alleviates chronic physical conditions. With regular practice, you will: improve your balance, coordination, strength & flexibility; develop dynamic resilience & stability; improve your posture & body awareness; learn to move with precision & control; sharpen your mind and improve your memory; and increase your energy & zest for life.
Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) was a sickly child with rickets & asthma. He pursued various exercise systems until he healed himself and became a model of strength & vitality. He created the system of exercise known today as Pilates with over 500 exercises performed on a mat and/or on equipment including Reformer, Cadillac, Chair & Barrel. Joseph Pilates worked in New York City with his wife Clara and many of the clients of their studio were dancers affiliated with New York City Ballet.
Red Mountain’s cofounder & Clinical Director, Deborah Redmond, MA, MFT, has over 25 years experience in fitness & wellness and is certified in the following: Pilates Instructor; Franklin Method Educator; American College Of Sports Medicine Health Fitness Instructor; Yoga Instructor. She is also a Marriage Family Therapist licensed in California and Pennsylvania. Deborah works behind the scenes to ensure you get the most up-to-date and effective exercise experiences in every Red Mountain Evolved Pilates class you attend.
When she began teaching Pilates, Deborah noticed that a large percentage of the population found it too difficult to begin and/or maintain a Pilates exercise program. Seeing a need, Deborah created a “Gentle Challenge” level to make Pilates accessible to this underserved group. Thanks to our innovative “Gentle Challenge” classes, many people have enjoyed great personal success with Red Mountain Evolved Pilates. Of the clients who begin in GC level, about half stay in GC and about half move on to our “Optimum Conditioning” (OC) level. Most important, whether GC or OC, they all LOVE their Pilates!
Patrick Redmond, cofounder & Executive Director, is a Certified Pilates Instructor, Certified Level II Franklin Method Educator & Certified Yoga Instructor. In 1987 he began practicing Yoga and in 1999 he started teaching Yoga. In 2003 he began a 4-year, 6,000-hour Pilates apprenticeship under Deborah. Patrick started teaching Pilates in 2004 and has taught over 4,000 classes. He has also completed the following Stott Pilates Instructor Training Programs: Intensive Mat; Advanced Mat; Intensive Reformer; Injuries & Special Populations. Patrick teaches Group Pilates Equipment classes & Franklin Method classes & workshops. He continues to study and practice Yoga for his own wellness. |

Pilates FAQs
I Am New To Pilates Equipment Classes. Will Red Mountain Evolved Pilates Be Right For Me?
Rest Easy! Many people are new to Pilates equipment classes. We will help you every step of the way! In fact, Deborah created our “Gentle Challenge” (GC) Level specifically to help new clients succeed. In your “Beginnings” class, we will determine whether you will start in our popular “Gentle Challenge” Level or our more difficult “Optimum Conditioning” Level. If you have limitations that require individual attention, then you will first take Clinical “Get Ready” Sessions with Deborah Redmond, Clinical Director.
I Have Already Taken Pilates Equipment Classes. Will Red Mountain Be Right For Me?
Excellent! You already know how terrific it feels to exercise using Pilates equipment. Depending on your fitness & exercise performance level combined with your learning style & personal preference, you may start in “Gentle Challenge” or “Optimum Conditioning” classes. Your instructor, Patrick Redmond, Executive Director, has taught over 4,000 Pilates sessions and is quite ready to provide you with appropriate challenges.
Whether I’m New Or Experienced, How Will Red Mountain Help Me Achieve Results?
Once you begin classes, you will quickly achieve lasting results due to the special features of The Red Mountain Evolved Pilates Teaching System including: 3 Levels; Series Classes; Twice Weekly; Two Free Classes Each Series; Free Franklin Method Classes; Original Sequences; Integrated Approach; Pilates Clinics; etc.
Why Are The Group Equipment Classes “Series Classes” Instead Of Drop-in?
Community: By attending the same classes regularly, you & your classmates will likely find common interests, skill levels & experiences leading to a comfortable feeling of familiarity and community with one another.
Connection: Serial attendance strengthens the professional connection between you & your instructor and enhances your instructor’s ability to give you helpful feedback including cues, corrections, images, etc.
Continuity: Series classes provide continuous, progressive learning as classes build on each other.
Commitment: Much of the work is showing up & doing the practices. Series classes foster that commitment.
Why Must Everyone Attend Two Classes Per Week Instead Of One?
Safety: Attending twice per week enables you to learn to perform equipment changes & exercises safely by repeatedly following the precise detailed instructions given in every class.
Strong Foundation: Attending twice per week enables you to develop and maintain a strong foundation by regularly practicing principles such as optimum breathing; dynamic alignment & beneficial joint positions; ideal pacing & flowing movements; appropriate exercise range of motion; dynamic resilience; core stabilization; etc.
Group Synergy: Attending twice per week enables you to practice at the carefully calibrated pace of that level of class and a beautiful group synergy arises as a result!
Fun & Interesting: Attending twice per week enables you to learn to correctly perform new exercises, utilize new techniques and practice new sequences. This keeps it fun & interesting for you and your instructor.
Proven Results: Attending twice per week enables you to experience proven results! There is a world of difference between once a week and twice a week.
How Do My “Two Free Classes” Work?
You pay $180 for each 6-week series and you get a bonus of two free classes to be used during that series. You can use your “Two Free Classes” vouchers to make up missed classes or better yet to simply take two extra classes above and beyond your 12 series classes. Vouchers expire at the end of each series and cannot be carried over to the next series. If you attend your 12 classes and also your two free classes, then your real cost per class is only $12.86.
NOTE: Tax will be added. Fully taxed series price is $195.30.
How Can Red Mountain Charge As Low As $12.86 For Each Pilates Group Equipment Class?
We make Pilates affordable so that everyone can enjoy the incredible benefits of Pilates. We work hard at our studio and live a simple life at home to keep our expenses low. We offer you Proven Results, Exceptional Instruction and Free Franklin Method Classes … all in our wonderful studio at 115 Unity Street with top-of-the-line equipment from Peak and Balanced Body. We make sure you receive lots of instructional attention and supervision.
Why Is Each Class Series Six Weeks Long?
Six week is just right. Shorter may produce fewer results. Longer may be too long of a commitment for some folks.
Why Must I First Attend A “Beginnings” Class Before Joining Series Classes?
Safety: Some clients may need individual clinical attention to get ready for group equipment classes. During your “Beginnings” Class, we will work together to determine whether you are ready to join series classes or whether you first need to attend Clinical “Get Ready” Sessions with Deborah Redmond, Clinical Director.
Placement: You will achieve the greatest results by starting in the class level that best suits you. During your “Beginnings” Class, we will work together to determine which class level best suits you.
Props: During your “Beginnings” Class, we will work together to determine which props are best for you.
| |
 |
What Are The Differences Between The Three Class Levels?
Gentle Challenge Classes: Deborah Redmond, Clinical Director observed over the years that many clients struggled uncomfortably to perform beginning Pilates exercises due to such factors as fitness level, learning style, weight issues, physical limitations, etc. To address this need, Deborah created our Gentle Challenge Level (GC). The exercises, props, sequences & instructions are all designed to safely and comfortably help clients achieve Pilates’ intended benefits. Most clients begin in our GC Level. About half stay in GC and about half move onto OC classes.
Optimum Conditioning Group Equipment Classes: Deborah designed our Optimum Conditioning Level or “OC” classes to include more challenging exercises, use fewer props and move at a faster pace than the GC Level. Some new clients are ready to start right away in the OC Level. These clients are relatively fit & trim; enjoy learning new exercises at a faster pace; are okay playing “catch up” to the more experienced clients; and/or have some experience with Pilates equipment. Most clients “make their home” in either Gentle Challenge or Optimum Conditioning Levels.
Ultimate Challenge Group Equipment Classes: Deborah designed our Ultimate Challenge Level or “UC” classes to include the most acrobatic and complex exercises, use the least amount of props and move at the fastest pace of all three levels. Clients first “master” the OC level before attending UC classes. Clients who attend UC Level classes love the challenge and diversity offered at this highest-level class.
How And When Do I Pay For My Red Mountain Evolved Pilates?
Beginnings Class: You pay $15 cash or check payable to Red Mountain Wellness when you arrive for your session.
First 6-Week Series Of Group Equipment Classes: To reserve your spots in your first series, you pay $180 cash or check payable to Red Mountain Wellness at end of your Beginnings Class. NOTE: If you are joining in the middle of a 6-week series, then you will only pay the prorated amount for the remaining classes in that series.
Renewal 6-Week Series Of Group Equipment Classes: To renew and stay in classes for the next 6-week series, you pay $180 cash or check payable to Red Mountain Wellness no later than week 6 of the current series. If you have not paid by the end of week 6 of the current series, then your class spots in the next series will no longer be held for you.
NOTE: Tax will be added. Fully taxed series price is $195.30.
If I Miss A Class, Then Can I Schedule A Makeup Class?
Yes. You may use one of your “Two Free Classes” vouchers to schedule a makeup class during the same series. |

Free Individual & Couples Yoga Psychology Consultations
What is Yoga Psychology?
The ancient yogis deeply understood the challenges of the human condition and developed a system of psychology that is complete in its definition and understanding of the mind. They realized that we are an integrated whole of body/mind/spirit and developed practices to harmonize all of our aspects. They identified the causes of human suffering and offered a holistic, spiritual path to overcome obstacles and create a graceful, peaceful life of acceptance and strength.
The science and practices of Yoga Psychology are collected and distilled in the seminal text The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Compiled around 400 BC, these aphorisms contain seeds of yogic wisdom handed down through centuries from sage to student. Though at first glance they may appear ancient and/or cryptic, the sutras are uncanny in their understanding of modern life and the trials and tribulations we experience. Patanjali explains all the reasons why we suffer and gives us explicit instruction on how to heal. Like other timeless texts on the nature of humans and their relationship to something larger – the meaning of the sutras is dependent upon what each individual student is ready to learn depending on their maturity level and personality.
Patanjali’s Sutras include many different methods, approaches and tools that can be applied to an extremely diverse set of people. Based on a variety of factors including individual life experiences, background, training and constitution, a method can be found to facilitate personal development and ultimately enlightenment. Most often an individual will benefit from his/her own special combination of methods and tools. Some of the methods are as follows:
Jnana – Intellectual, Scholarly, Philosophical
Bhakti – Emotional, Devotional, Sentimental
Karma – Activist, Service/Duty, Cause & Effect
Raja – Introspective, Willful, Psychological
Tantra – Subtle Energy, Ritual, Alchemy
Nada – Sound, Music, Vibration
Laya - Pacifist, Meditative, Introverted
Hatha – Physical Exercises, Purifications, Preparations

Deborah makes the sutras come alive for the modern student. She teaches students how to apply these tools in effective and empowering ways. The more the sutras reveal themselves to the student, the more deeply the student embodies the practices. Through practicing and integrating the tools of the sutras, the student grows in wisdom and awareness becoming able to discover and digest deeper truths regarding his/her own nature.

| NOTE: Over the years, Deborah has personally and professionally experienced the effectiveness & importance of Yoga Psychology’s tools for transformation. As her counseling work became more spiritual, Deborah began to feel that it was not right to charge for the work. She felt that the work should be free and be allowed to become as spiritual as best served each individual or couple. To facilitate this, in 2008 Deborah became an Ordained Interfaith Minister. In light of that, these consultations are categorized as pastoral counseling utilizing the tools & resources of Yoga Psychology. |

Harry Howard,
DPM, RPT
Pilates Client |
“It is with pleasure, privilege and high praise that I recommend Deborah and Patrick Redmond to you. Both Deborah and Patrick are outstanding teachers, clinicians and people.
My name is Harry Howard and I have been a student of Pilates at Red Mountain for approximately two years; primarily under Patrick’s tutelage. Their knowledge of Pilates history, principles, techniques, and instruction are vast. They explain, demonstrate and teach in a clear and concise method.
I am a Podiatrist (>21 years) and a Physical Therapist (>28 years) and greatly appreciate their knowledge of the biomechanics, kinesiology, and anatomy. Their instruction and teaching methods are well tuned for the beginner as well as for a professional clinician.
The Red Mountain Studio is a place of tranquility, peace, harmony, friendship, and learning. I have benefited with increased flexibility, increased muscle tone, improved coordination, improved balance, and a greater sense of harmony and self. I have made new friends and become a friend to a wonderful group of people whom I cherish dearly and we are now family.
I look forward to seeing you at Red Mountain.” |

Pilates & Yoga Client |
“Deborah Redmond is a truly extraordinary wellness professional. I have worked with her over the last ten years during some very large life events including pregnancy and childbirth, selling a business, changing careers and several big moves. I deeply believe my strength and resiliency for all that life threw at me were greatly enhanced by the work I did with Deborah.
Deborah has I believe a very unusually large knowledge of the wellness area and many tools to bring to a given situation. I worked with her in both Yoga and Pilates. Her ability to assess a situation, determine what is the best course of action and then clearly and precisely explain it is rare. She is very intelligent, thoughtful, resourceful, kind and patient. I have learned and grown a great deal from her and I would not hesitate in recommending her in whatever capacity she chooses to use her gifts.” |

Linda London
Pilates Client |
“During the two years that I have been in Patrick’s Pilates class, I have gained strength and improved my posture. Patrick is incredibly kind and patient with my less-than-nimble fingers adjusting the equipment and attentive to any signs of strain from the exercises. As I approach my 75th birthday, with most faculties on the wane, I delight in my body’s ability to improve. I look forward to each class and afterwards experience greater confidence and a feeling of well-being. Thank you Patrick and good luck in the Pacific Northwest.” |

Pete Ricchiuti, Esquire
Pilates & Yoga Client |
“To Everyone:
I began working with Deborah about ten years ago. At the time I had fairly significant low back problems and limited flexibility. Deborah worked with me through Yoga and Pilates. She had an uncanny ability to quickly determine whether a given session should be more vigorous, or one that required a more gently stretching. While she had each session planned in advance, if my mood or condition warranted a change, she adapted the workout to my needs. The workouts were always interesting and fun, and frequently challenging. The work significantly improved my flexibility and strength, and made a huge difference in the condition of my back.
I didn’t realize how really unique and skilled she is until I took classes with other instructors; then the difference became obvious. The honesty, integrity and philosophy Deborah and Patrick bring to their work is simply wonderful.
Please feel free to contact me for additional information, or an even stronger recommendation. Our loss in Philadelphia is your gain. My email address is jricchiuti@yrchlaw.com.” |

Gwen Sperling
Pilates Client |
“I would like to take this opportunity to pay a special tribute to Patrick Redmond for his outstanding service as both a teacher and a trainer.
I have known Patrick for approximately five years. At the time that Red Mountain opened, I had been very frustrated in searching for a place where the instructors really cared for the students and put forth an extra effort to make sure that students got the proper training.
During my entire stay at Red Mountain, Patrick has displayed extreme patience and has spent detailed time in dealing with individual student needs. He was explicit. He was repetitive. He made sure that each student followed the correct procedure. He made certain that the form was correct. He made sure that we completed all of the assigned tasks in the time allotted.
Having been with Patrick and Deborah for the past four plus years has created some tremendous changes in my body. It was reported to me by my gynecologist that my bone density test was the best that I have ever attained. I must attribute this to the Pilates training that I received at Red Mountain.
I will forever be grateful for Patrick’s disciplined approach to teaching and training. Due to his dedication, I looked forward to all my sessions. My mind and my body have shown the results.
Sincerely,
Gwen Sperling” |

Physical Yoga
& Pilates Client |
“Based on my daughter’s personal recommendation from her own experience, I began private sessions with Deborah at Red Mountain in Philadelphia. At the time I was suffering from lower back pain, arthritis in the knees, and depression. I began private sessions with Deborah once a week. This slowly progressed into two times a week. Eventually, I was able to minimize my private sessions to once a week and attend group sessions with Patrick twice a week. Over the course of three years I have lost 35 pounds, my depression has improved tremendously, and I feel like a new person. Through Deborah’s guidance and counseling I now have a deeper understanding of how to care for myself through diet and exercise.” |

DeVida J. McKevitt
Pilates Client |
“Hi Deborah and Patrick.
I just wanted to say thank you.
Your teaching methods, the small class size, the master classes, the descriptions of the exercises and the imagery, and even the prices made the Pilates experience at Red Mountain very rewarding to me. I was so afraid of the reformer when I started and you both made it a wonderful experience. Your class plans and exercises were thoughtfully put together to tone and firm specific muscles in the body and there was a great variance of the equipment used every two weeks. It made for a good looking and well-shaped body. I noticed the difference almost three months into study with you.
Your studio is one of the cleanest and well-decorated spaces I have seen so far in my search for a new studio. It was a very calm space to work out in.
I am truly sorry that you are leaving, but I understand. I wish you every success in the Pacific Northwest.
Good luck and thanks again!” |
